This line comes from a poem regarding the Gunpowder Plot. On November 5, 1605, a fellow by the name of Guy Fawkes led a group of English Catholics in a protest against their persecution. This protest came in the form of an assassination attempt on King James I (that King James I) by blowing up Parliament’s House of Lords. The plot failed and all the conspirators were executed. To celebrate the failed assassination attempt, the English people lit bonfires and set off fireworks, and celebrations continue to this day.
