Flirting with Playbacks

February is right around the corner and with it comes Valentine’s Day. Regardless of your feelings towards the holiday, it’s a time when lovers and friends send cards and candy. Others try to get their flirt on.

Speaking of flirting, Mega Millions teased the idea of a playback. It was close, but a playback wasn’t meant to be this past Friday night. What we did see was a jackpot that climbed to $141 million.

General Lottery Analysis

With winning numbers 3, 4, 18, 23, 38, and MB 24, the {2-2-1-1} Pattern made its 147th appearance January 24, 2020.

Encore and Hops

Today’s title means one of two things. Either Lottery Binge has decided to venture into the world of craft beer brewing (and should quit before even getting started) or there was an Australia Play and a Pattern encore. We’re going to go with the latter.

This past Wednesday night was also good for fans of repeating Four-Number and Three-Number Combinations. As busy as the night was, there were no grand prize winners in either lottery. Lotto Texas’s jackpot climbed to $5.5 million while Powerball waltzed into $373 million.

Lotto Texas

General Lottery Analysis

The winning numbers for January 22nd, 2020 were 4, 13, 20, 35, 48, and 51. This marked the 235th appearance of the {2-2-2} Pattern and the 2 2 2 Specific Order. This would also make this the 235th drawing in which an Australia Play was present.

There have now been 1727 Lotto Texas drawings and the Australia Play has appeared in 13.6% of them. Prior to Wednesday night, an Australia Play was seen October 30th, 2019.

Will a {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern three-peat in Powerball send its jackpot to $400 million or close to it? Could Lotto Texas see an Australia Play encore?

Strange and Remarkable 23

On the surface, 23 doesn’t look like a remarkable number. There are 24 hours in a day, not 23. The answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is not 23 (it’s 42), and 23 is so, so…so odd!

Why then is today’s post about 23? That’s the number of times the {3-2-1} Pattern has played in Mega Millions. This Pattern may not play often in this lottery, but when it showed up this past Tuesday, it made an impact. The grand prize went unclaimed yet again and rose to $130 million.

General Lottery Analysis

The {3-2-1} Pattern of January 21, 2020 was thanks to winning numbers 16, 18, 29, 31, 37, and MB 8.

There have now been 534 Mega Millions drawings and this Pattern has played 4.31% of the time. We last saw the {3-2-1} Pattern October 22nd, 2019.

The [2-3-1] General Order, now with 11 appearances, has played in 47.8% of the 23 drawings where {3-2-1} was the winning Pattern. Once all 534 drawings have been taken into consideration, this General Order has played 2.06% of the time. Prior to Tuesday night, the [2-3-1] General Order played December 21st, 2018.

Now with two appearances, the 0 2 3 0 0 1 Specific Order has played in 18.2% of the 11 drawings where the General Order was [2-3-1]. This Specific Order has also played in 8.70% of the 23 drawings where {3-2-1} was the winning Pattern and in 0.37% of all 534 drawings. The 0 2 3 0 0 1 Specific Order made its first appearance in the September 12th, 2014 drawing.

Three-Number Combination(s)

An uncommon Pattern left a couple of repeating Three-Number Combinations in its wake:

It’s not likely that the {3-2-1} Pattern will make an encore in Mega Millions. Still, there’s the matter of the growing jackpot. Will Friday night’s results make the jackpot grow again?

The Cleanest Play

The cleanest play in the lottery world is the playback. This phenomenon occurs in Mega Millions when the Pattern, General Order, and Specific Order, share a date when they previously played together. There is yet another level of playback. In this playback is a special Pattern. When this Pattern plays in Mega Millions, there is but one General Order and one Specific Order that show up alongside it.

That special playback is the Australia Play, and it sent the prize to $116 million.

General Lottery Analysis

The Australia Play made its 17th appearance in the January 17, 2020 drawing. The winning numbers were  3, 25, 30, 54, 70, and MB 9.

Given that there have been 533 drawings, the {1-1-1-1-1-1} Pattern, [1-1-1-1-1-1] General Order, and 1 1 1 1 1 1 Specific Order have played 3.19% of the time. Prior to Friday night, the Australia Play occurred in the September 17, 2019 drawing.

Will Tuesday’s drawing see a rare Australia Play encore or will another Pattern take center stage?

One Jackpot Falls. Another Stands

The ride of a jackpot high has to end sometime, and on January 15, 2020, that time came for one lottery. Lotto Texas came into the new year riding on the high of its increasing jackpot. With the $17.5 million prize now won, the jackpot reset itself to $5 million. The Powerball jackpot stood firm, rising to $321 million.

The Great Scaleback

If you partook in Mega Millions last Friday and read our analysis, you’d agree that it was a scorcher! Much like the unseasonable warmth, the onslaught of repeating Three-Number Combinations (half of them thanks to a repeating Four-Number Combination) was relentless. This past Tuesday told a different story: Mega Millions scaled back. An even-tempered play sent the jackpot up to $103 million.

General Lottery Analysis

The January 14, 2020 Mega Millions drawing marked a milestone for the {3-1-1-1} Pattern. With winning numbers 9, 11, 13, 31, 47, and MB 11, this Pattern made its 100th appearance!

Reduced-Strength Encore and a Combination Triple Offense

The weekend is a cherished time. It’s meant to be the two-day reprieve from the grinds of work and school. It’s a time to catch up, a time to hang out, and a time to rest.

Lotto Texas most certainly took the “rest” part to heart. There was indeed a {4-2} Pattern encore, but this appearance wasn’t nearly as explosive. An over-the-top play wasn’t needed to send the jackpot to $17.5 million.

Powerball kept it classy. However, underneath that class was a monster of a jackpot that underwent another growth spurt. The prize climbed to $296 million.

Two questions weigh on our minds as we head into Wednesday: Will the {4-2} Pattern be bold enough to go for a three-peat in Lotto Texas? Will the prizes in both Lotto Texas and Powerball continue to grow, or will they be reset?

Part of a Balanced Lottery Diet

One week ago, Mega Millions found itself in the grip of a lull. That Friday night was your “standard” drawing. No encores or other big plays to speak of, and no repeating Three-Number Combinations.

Oh, what a difference a week makes!

We’re not sure what got into Mega Millions this past Friday night, but it decided to indulge in a diet rich in repeating Three-Number Combinations. This was in addition to a {2-2-1-1} Pattern encore. With no one able to match all six numbers, the jackpot rose to $91 million.

General Lottery Analysis

Fresh from this past Tuesday, the {2-2-1-1} Pattern made its 146th appearance! The winning numbers for January 10, 2020 were 17, 27, 49, 51, 66, and MB 2.

The Combination you see above made its debut in the May 29, 2015 drawing. If you recall, the last time we saw a repeating Four-Number Combination in Mega Millions was Christmas Eve 2019. How often do we get to witness two repeating Four-Number Combinations within the span of a few weeks?

Three-Number Combinations

“Wild Wednesday” with Lotto Texas and Powerball

Lull? What lull?

Lotto Texas, known for its chastity and civility (compared to Mega Millions and Powerball anyway) was anything but chaste or civil! When it came to wild and unruly, this lottery reigned supreme. This uncharacteristic behavior sent the jackpot to an even $17 million.

Powerball didn’t act foolish, and perhaps it didn’t need to. The massive jackpot, which rose to $277 million, helped this lottery preserve the appearance of dignity.
