Pattern Pie

Thanksgiving. You know, that holiday sandwiched in between Halloween and Christmas? The holiday being swallowed by the ever-persistent “Christmas Creep-up?”  November 21st may as well have been the unofficial start to the Thanksgiving holiday. The highways and airports were (are!) packed, and those in charge of the meal were getting those last ingredients.

Mega Millions isn’t one to show up to an occasion empty-handed. Did it bring a rare Pattern, or did this past Friday’s Pattern make an encore?

General Lottery Analysis

Turns out it was neither! With winning numbers 3, 7, 22, 27, 50, and MB 3, the {2-2-1-1} Pattern made its 87th appearance.

This Pattern has now played in 28.2% of the 308 Mega Millions drawings, and was last seen in the October 27th, 2017 drawing.

Now with 31 appearances, the [2-2-1-1] General Order has played in 35.6% of the 87 drawings where the {2-2-1-1} Pattern has appeared. And, it has played in roughly 10.1% of all 308 drawings. Prior to Tuesday night, this General Order was seen in the October 13th, 2017 drawing.

Making its third appearance was the 2 2 0 1 0 1 Specific Order. This has now played in 9.68% of the 31 drawings where the [2-2-1-1] General Order has appeared. The 2 2 0 1 0 1 Specific Order has now played in 3.45% of the 87 drawings where the {2-2-1-1} Pattern has appeared. Finally, when taking all 308 drawings into account, this Specific Order has played 0.97% of the time. This instance of the 2 2 0 1 0 1 Specific Order was reconfigured from the 3 1 0 1 0 1 Specific Order that appeared in the May 22nd, 2015 drawing. The General Order for that night was [3-1-1-1].

Three Number Combination(s)

The repeating Three-Number Combination of the evening was 7, 22, 27.

What gift will Mega Millions snag on Black Friday?

It’s a Friday Night Thing

Could there be a trend a-brewing in Mega Millions? The {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern made an appearance in the November 17th drawing. What’s interesting is that so far in November, this Pattern has only played on Fridays. In fact, this past Friday was the third Friday in a row. As the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern has shown us in the past, there’s usually more to the story.

General Lottery Analysis

With winning numbers 3, 26, 55, 58, 70, and MB 15, the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern has now played 133 times.

Given that there have been 307 Mega Millions drawings to date under the 70-25 system, this Pattern has played in 43.3% of them. We last saw this Pattern exactly one week ago, in the November 10, 2017 drawing. The first November appearance of the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern was November 3, 2017.

In fact, it was the November 3rd drawing when we last saw the [1-1-1-2-1] General Order. Now with 31 appearances, this General Order has played in 23.3% of the 133 drawings where the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern has appeared. It has also played in 10.1% of all 307 drawings.

And making its world debut was the 1 1 0 1 2 1 Specific Order. This has now played in 3.23% of the 31 drawings where the [1-1-1-2-1] General Order has appeared. And, it has played in 0.75% of the 133 drawings where the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern has appeared. Finally, the 1 1 0 1 2 1 Specific Order has played in 0.33% of all 307 drawings.

Will the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern make an encore appearance the Tuesday before (U.S.) Thanksgiving?

Common or Not Common?

That is the question. The {3-2-1} Pattern made an appearance in the November 14, 2017 Mega Millions drawing. Those of you who follow our Lotto Texas posts know that the {3-2-1} Pattern is the most commonly seen there. But what of Mega Millions? Sure, the {3-2-1} Pattern doesn’t play as much as the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern (The King of Mega Millions Patterns), but it has a respectable showing. Right?

General Lottery Analysis

Well, when it comes to number of appearances, the {3-2-1} Pattern doesn’t even come close to the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern. Nor the {2-2-1-1} Pattern for that matter. With winning numbers 1, 14, 21, 22, 28, and MB 19, Tuesday’s drawing marked the 14th appearance of the Pattern. How fitting!

Given that there have been 306 drawings in the 70-25 system, the {3-2-1} Pattern has played 4.58% of the time. This Pattern was last seen in the April 21, 2017 drawing.

Making its sixth appearance was the [2-3-1] General Order. This has now played in 42.9% of the 14 drawings where the {3-2-1} Pattern has appeared, and in 1.96% of all 306 drawings. Prior to Tuesday night, this General Order was seen on January 6, 2017. We reconfigured this General Order from the [2-1-2-1] General Order from that night.

The 2 0 0 3 0 1 Specific Order made its world debut. It has now played in roughly 16.67% of the six drawings where the [2-3-1] General Order has appeared. This Specific Order has also now played in 7.14% of the 14 drawings where the {3-2-1} Pattern has appeared, and in 0.33% of all 306 drawings.

Will the {3-2-1} be daring enough to make an encore Friday night?

King of the Hill

Some Patterns, when they disappear from play, are never gone for long. It’s just one way they climb the ranks, so to speak. But, only one Pattern can be king of the hill. In Mega Millions, that Pattern is {2-1-1-1-1}. What shenanigans did it get up to November 10, 2017?

General Lottery Analysis

Friday night saw winning numbers 6, 23, 38, 42, 58, and MB 24, bringing the number of appearances up to 132.

The [1-1-2-1-1] General Order made its 35th appearance. With that said, it has played in 26.5% of the 132 drawings where the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern has appeared. When taking all 305 drawings into account, this General Order has played 11.5% of the time. Prior to Friday night, the [1-1-2-1-1] General Order was last seen on August 11, 2017. We reconfigured this from the [1-3-1-1] General Order that was a part of the old 75-15 system.

Now with six appearances, the 1 1 2 0 1 1 Specific Order has played in 17.1% of the 35 drawings where the [1-1-2-1-1] General Order has appeared. This Specific Order has also played in 4.55% of the 132 drawings where the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern appeared. Finally, when looking at all 305 drawings, this Specific Order has played 1.97% of the time. With November close to halfway over, and (U.S.) Thanksgiving right around the corner, will the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern make an encore in Tuesday’s drawing?

November Oldies

Even after the introduction of a new system, some oldies showed up. No, nothing dating before this decade appeared. That’s more Lotto Texas territory, anyway. But, there were a couple of eyebrow-raising developments in the November 7, 2017 Mega Millions drawing.

General Lottery Analysis

Tuesday night’s winning numbers were 1, 54, 60, 68, 69, and MB 11. This marked the 61st appearance of the {3-1-1-1} Pattern.

With 304 drawings to date (Remember, a new system went into effect last week), this Pattern has played 20.1% of the time. We last saw the {3-1-1-1} Pattern on October 17, 2017. This was reconfigured from the {2-2-1-1} Pattern seen that night.

Now with 15 appearances, the [1-1-3-1] General Order has played in 24.6% of the 61 drawings where the {3-1-1-1} Pattern has appeared. And, it has now played in 4.93% of all 304 drawings. The [1-1-3-1] General Order was basking in the summer sun the last time it appeared. More specifically, the July 22, 2016 drawing.  We reconfigured this from the [1-4-1] General Order seen that night.

Speaking of specifics, the 1 0 0 1 3 1 Specific Order made its fourth appearance Tuesday night. This puts it at 26.7% of the 15 drawings where the [1-1-3-1] General Order has appeared. When looking at the 61 drawings where the {3-1-1-1} Pattern has played, this Specific Order has played 6.56% of the time. Finally, it has played in all 304 drawings. It’s been a while since anyone last saw the 1 0 0 1 3 1 Specific Order. It previously played in the November 14, 2014 drawing. Can you believe that it’s been almost three years?

Three Number Combination(s)

There were no repeating Three-Number Combinations Tuesday night.

Will there be a {3-1-1-1} Pattern encore or more “oldies” in Friday night’s drawing?

New Month, New Script

First order of business: a correction. In the post highlighting the October 27, 2017 Mega Millions drawing, we had mentioned that the “regular” numbers would range from 1 to 75, and Mega Balls would be from 1 to 25. The “regular” balls will be from 1 to 70. Mega Balls will range from 1 to 25.

What does this mean for Lottery Binge, and our other sites? The Lottery Trend-Mega Millions analysis team reconfigured our database to account for this new system, henceforth known as 70-25.

Do we have to start all over? Not at all! All drawings in the old system (75-15) that contained “regular” numbers 71-75 will be omitted in our Mega Millions assessment going forward. There are plenty of drawings that did not have 71-75!

General Lottery Analysis

Eerily, or no, the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern made an encore appearance in the November 3rd drawing. This brings the number of appearances up to 131. The winning numbers were 10, 22, 42, 61, 69, and MB 3.

The 1 1 1 0 2 1 Specific Order made its sixth appearance. This Specific Order has played in 20% of the 30 drawings where the [1-1-1-2-1] General Order has played. It has also played in 4.58% of the 131 drawings where the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern has appeared, and in 1.98% of all drawings. Prior to Friday, the 1 1 1 0 2 1 Specific Order previously played in the March 24, 2017 drawing.

For our U.S. and Canadian readers, don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour Saturday night. Speaking of, will Mega Millions fall back on the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern in Tuesday’s drawing?

Halloween Treats

Before we begin tonight’s post, we would like to congratulate the Houston Astros on their first-ever World Series win. Go ‘Stros!

What a night! Whether it was gorging on candy, binge watching horror, or watching the World Series, Halloween had something for everybody. We can’t forget the number lovers, though! Mega Millions had the honor of falling on Halloween this year. Although October 31st was the first day for the new system, the Mega Ball was not one of the new numbers (16-25). Was the old system not quite ready to give up the ghost?

General Lottery Analysis

Tuesday’s winning numbers were 6, 28, 31, 52, 53, and MB 12, bringing the number of appearances of the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern to 174.

Will a {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern encore be how Mega Millions starts November?

It’s the Last Dance

For those of you who may not know, the October 27, 2017  drawing was the last one with Mega Balls 1 through 15. Starting on Halloween, the Mega Ball range will go from 1 to 25. “Regular” balls will remain 1 to 75. Also, the price of a Mega Millions ticket will double in price from $1 to $2. This is not a (pre) Halloween scare.

Whatever happens in Mega Millions, Lottery Binge and the Lottery Trend analysis team will be here.

Now that we’ve got that covered, which Pattern was the send-off for this system?

General Lottery Analysis

The {2-2-1-1} Pattern had the honor of playing one final time under the current system. With winning numbers 17, 27, 41, 51, 52, and MB 13, this Pattern has played 125 times.

Given that there have been 420 drawings, this Pattern has played 29.8% of the time. We last saw the {2-2-1-1} Pattern in the October 17, 2017 drawing.

What does Halloween have in store for Mega Millions?

Dodging an Encore

October 24, 2017 was a big night. The Dodgers defeated the Astros in Game 1 of the World Series, and the {3-1-1-1} Pattern didn’t make an encore. The Specific Order was also last seen sometime this year. But, there was a phenomenon that doesn’t happen often in Mega Millions. See if you can guess what it is without scrolling through the post.

General Lottery Analysis

With winning numbers 20, 24, 34, 56, 64, and MB 6, the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern has now played in 173 drawings.

No Pattern encore here. Source: lotterytrend-megamillions.com.

Given that there have been 419 Mega Millions drawings to date, this Pattern has now played 41.3% of the time, and was last seen September 22, 2017.

When it comes to Specific Orders, the 0 2 1 1 1 1 was the choice of the evening. With eight appearances, this Specific Order has played in 18.2% of the 44 drawings where the [2-1-1-1-1] General Order has appeared. This statistic becomes 4.62% when accounting for the 173 drawings where the {2-1-1-1-1} Pattern has appeared. And, when looking at all 419 drawings, this Specific Order has played 1.91% of the time. The 0 2 1 1 1 1 Specific Order previously played in the February 7, 2017 drawing.

Four-Number Combination(s)

Repeating Four-Number Combinations in Mega Millions are like U.S. two-dollar bills. It sounds crazy, but it’s a thing, and it’s rare.

The repeating Four-Number Combination of the evening was

  • 34, 56, 64, MB 6

and it made its debut in the January 7, 2014 drawing.

Three-Number Combination(s)

Of course, when there’s a repeating Four-Number Combination, that means four repeating Three-Number Combinations were nestled inside. The Combinations were as follows:

  • 56, 64, MB 6
  • 34, 64, MB 6
  • 34, 56, MB 6

As is the nature of these types of repeating Three-Number Combinations, they too made their debut in the January 7th drawing mentioned earlier.

These weren’t the only repeating Three-Number Combinations. In fact, there was one more:

  • 20, 34, MB 6

This one debuted a bit later in 2014. More specifically, the October 3, 2014 drawing.

Will the {2-1-1-1-1} make an encore Friday night?

Breaking the Streak

October 20th saw the {2-2-1-1} Pattern streak come to an end. However, Mega Millions wasn’t completely quiet Friday night. There was a Specific Order that hasn’t played in over three years. What Pattern would be so bold to break the streak?

General Lottery Analysis

The {3-1-1-1} Pattern was that bold Pattern. With winning numbers 6, 23, 63, 66, 73, and MB 9, this Pattern has played 71 times.

The numbers that stopped a four-peat. Source: lotterytrend-megamillions.com.

Given that there have been 418 Mega Millions drawings, this Pattern has played in about 17% of them. Prior to Friday night, we last saw the {3-1-1-1} Pattern in the October 6th, 2017 drawing.

With 27 appearances, the [1-1-3-1] General Order has played in 38% of the 71 drawings where the {3-1-1-1} Pattern has appeared. This General Order has also played in 6.46% of all 418 drawings. The [1-1-3-1] General Order had previously played in the September 29th, 2017 drawing.

And now for the “Specific Order that hadn’t played in years”. The 1 1 0 0 3 1 Specific Order made its third appearance. Of the 27 drawings where the [1-1-3-1] General Order appeared, this Specific Order has played in 11.1% of them. We’ve also seen this Specific Order in 4.23% of the 71 drawings where the {3-1-1-1} Pattern has played, and in 0.72% of all 418 drawings. This Specific Order was last seen in the August 8th, 2014 Mega Millions drawing.

Three-Number Combination(s)

It’s tempting to think that these numbers would also produce at least one repeating Three-Number Combination. There weren’t any this past Friday.

Will the {3-1-1-1} Pattern make an encore in Tuesday’s drawing? Will next week see another Specific Order that hadn’t played in years?
